Since 2012, MTRL DSGN has specialized in creating environmentally-friendly, custom design solutions for homes, offices, and commercial spaces.

Based in Omaha, Nebraska, our collaborative studio blends creativity, engineering and execution to produce signage, displays, furniture, fixtures, awards, gifts and home goods that people love to use every day.

We started with an ambitious goal: designing eco-friendly products and even “growing our own furniture” by cultivating timber bamboo on-site.

No risk, no reward, right?

While harsh Omaha winters proved a bit too tough on the bamboo that we planted, the experiment underscored our commitment to sustainability and innovative thinking, which became foundational pillars of our practice.

We launched a line of unique products made from bamboo, and through our marketing efforts, we met and formed relationships with other creative professionals - architects, interior designers, brand strategists, restauranteurs, and other businesses. Those relationships opened up a path toward custom design and production work, a path that eventually became the primary focus of MTRL DSGN.

By the late 2010s, we had found a niche and were creating custom fixtures, displays and branded collateral pieces for many new restaurants that were opening across the country. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, nearly all of the work in our queue disappeared. We had to scale down, and we operated the studio in a very slim and trim manner for some time. There are opportunities in every challenge though, and this experience taught us how to be more diverse and resilient: we tightened operations and emerged leaner and more focused on our core mission.

Today, MTRL DSGN is a small, streamlined design and production studio, with big ambitions. We continue to collaborate with designers, architects, creative professionals and businesses large and small on custom projects—signage, fixtures, donor displays, furniture, and more. At the same time, we’ve been updating and developing a new line of products for our online shop, including more customizable items such as laser-engraved wooden coasters, cutting boards, awards, displays and gifts.

Through it all, our goal remains unchanged:
to create better experiences through design.
